| My mother was born in Seattle, but my father was born in Maine. He has a photograph of himself in Seattle in the late fifties at a picnic at Woodland Park Zoo (in Seattle) for Maniacs, that are people from Maine. My great-grandparents worked as fur trappers. There was not a lot of money in it. My grandfather worked in construction, building the suburbs in Lynnwood. My grandmother kept house, worked a dime dance girl on Jackson in Seattle, and as a cashier at Sprouse-Rite. My father worked as a short order cook and a bus driver. My mother’s family came from Kentucky; at least, the obvious verbal side came from Kentucky. The less verbal side (the somewhat sinister side) came from Iowa. My grandmother has kept house. My mother’s father worked as a mechanic. My mother has worked as a waitress and then as a technical illustrator.
I've published four collections of short stories, The Remains of River Names, Misplaced Alice, The Moss Gatherers, and The End is the Beginning. My first novel, Shoot the Buffalo, was published by Clear Cut Press. I have won several prizes including The American Book Award and The Stranger Genius Award. Some links:
